How to transfer files from my old computer to my new computer?

Question

by rtm862
: How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new computer?

I just purchased a new computer. The new computer has Windows XP, USB ports, a Firewire port, RJ 11, and RJ45 port.

The old computer has Windows Vista, USB ports, RJ11, and RJ45(no Firewire).

I need to tranfer my files from the old computer to the new one. What is best way to do this? Software, cables, etc? Windows has a files transfer setting. Will I have a problem since one computer is XP and the other is Vista?

Assuming the computer are not networked, I’d use either a large usb flash drive or an external usb hard disk.

You could burn files to cd..but that would take a while.

Use a flash drive. It is the simplest and the most reliable way.

You can transfer settings without any problem.

Now that you mentioned RJ45, you can connect both computers with a ‘crossover cable’ one with the leads crimped reversely. You can get it in any computer shack.

Then you add them in a workgroup and share the folders and files.

Then its pointless transfering files in the network. They are available to both computers anyway.
