hi dominique

from what i remember the first mouse was connected via a serial port… and on some computers the keyboard would also connect via the serial port…allthough the keyboard was the first peripheral to use the ps2 connection which was then followed by the mouse

the first ever mouse was nothing like you use todays… and was actually a trackball, and this was invented by Tom Cranston, Fred Longstaff and Kenyon Taylor working on the Royal Canadian Navy‘s DATAR project in 1952,then after many alterations of the design the ball mouse was the peripheral used in home pc,s for years, however the ball would stick and affect the movement of the pointer so thats when the optical mouse was designed and released…

optical mice use a light-emitting diode however this wont work on any reflective surfaces such as mirrors or shiny surfaces…. and then theres laser mice which as the name implies uses a laser which is more precise in movement and sensetivity

optical mice use dpi or dots per inch to measure its sensetivity.. and this can range from 400/800dpi for the average optical mouse up to 3200dpi( and even 5400dpi ) for gaming mice…. the higher the dpi the more precise the movement will be,so thats why you have a higher dpi in gaming mice since gamers demand more precise aiming and movement, especially in first person shooters

one of the latest mice you can use is the gyroscopic mouse which can be used without any surface…. these are also known as Inertial mice and the same technology is found in pointing devices used with whiteboards…(presentations )

and with the introduction of touch screen technology and windows 7,s support the mouse could be replaced with your hand, however i dont think it will…. ive only used a touch screen on a few occasions i to be honest i hate it… im happy with my logitech mouse……

i hope this helps

good luck dominique !
