A router works with pretty much any connection. You connect your broadband connection to it, the to your computer. Basically it filters out any data that is not intended for your computer.

A router is piece of hardware that let’s several computers share one internet (and / or local area network) connection. If you only have one computer, then you really don’t need a router. But say you go and buy a laptop that comes with built-in wireless LAN capability, then you would want to hook up a wireless router so that you could access the internet on the laptop.

Yes your computer is compatible with a router. There are routers and wirless routers for home use. Both are the same concept. A router job is to share internet connection to other computers or laptops or devices that have network capablities. A router does not provide internet but distributes your main broadbad connection to other devices. If you get a wireless router which would be better, could provide internet access to a laptop with having to run a phyiscal cable to your main broadband line. And of course with either router you can share printers and folders.

A router takes the signals from your broadband and “splits” them so that multiple computers can use them. People use routers with broadband connections all the time; I don’t know of any reason you couldn’t. However, unless you have more than one computer, there’s no reason to do it, except maybe to go wireless. I only have one computer, but because of the way my place is laid out, I would have to run a 50-foot cable to get connectivity; I use wireless to get rid of the wire and still have connectivity.

A router is used for two reasons.. either together or separate, depends on your needs.

A router is a good firewall

A router is used to connect two or more computers together so that both can use the Internet and share files between the two.

The router is hooked up between the cable modem and your computer/s.

The router assigns LAN (local area network) IP‘s to each computer to make it simpler to network.

The router helps block port access into your computer and is a better defense against hackers then a software firewall such as Nortons Internet Security or other software firewalls someone might install on their system.

A router is very easy to set up if you read the instruction manual that comes with it.
