Is it ok to leave my computer constantly on? Will it damage the computer? How often should I shutdown my computer?

I leave my computer on all the time. What you should really shutdown is your monitor so the image won’t get burn to the screen. The only downside of leaving your PC on all the time is the amount of electricity you are using.

It won’t hurt your computer to leave it on all the time, but it will use more electricity.

For the relatively short lifespan of a computer (3 to 5 years) shutting it down when you’re not using it won’t cause excessive wear-and-tear on it.

So, yeah, shut it down (and turn off your display) when you’re not using it, and you’ll help save electricity and the environment.

(And if you’re connected to the internet via DSL or Cable, you’ll be less vulnerable to security threats.)

Always log off i/net and turn screen off.

I also find more dust can build up if it is still on for long times, so you should clean / dust the inside more often to prevent heat build up and excessive fan ware

I leave my machine powered on all the time, I have to because if I don’t the CMOS gets wiped. But I have the monitor set to turn off after 20 minutes.

PS – I was going to use the name Vista for my operating system but microsoft beat me to it.
