How to transfer files using a modem, you can connect the two computers?
Question
by rzrscm: How can I connect two computer together using their modems to transfer files?
I have an old computer running Windows 95. I’m running Windows XP on my main computer. I need to transfer files from my main computer to the old computer. The only way I’m going to be able to do this is by directly connecting them.
I tried connecting them by hooking a phone cord into the LINE jack on both of the modems and doing a direct connection through Hyperterminal, but that didn’t work because I’m probably doing something wrong and I don’t know what.
Old computer. Only modem. No USB. Not putting any money into it. I would know how to network them otherwise. I know this is possible because I’ve read a few articles on it…I’m just having trouble doing it myself.
Also, I need to do it this way because the CD-ROM I installed in it is having trouble reading burned CDs and I can’t exactly install any drivers since I don’t have any driver floppies for the CD-ROM…And I can’t transfer my files with floppy disks because I don’t have any other floppy drives on any other computer.
Also, I’m not trying to transfer Windows-related system files…Only DOS-related files…I’m not computer illiterate and I know what I’m doing. I don’t need any advice on how useful the computer, OS, and what I’m trying to use it for is…Just need an answer to my question.

You won’t be able to connect them via the modems. You might be able to use a USB file transfer cable, but I’ve never tried that before. Your best bet is to connect them to a network using Ethernet cables and use the Windows File and Print Sharing to set up a shared folder on one of the computers to copy the files to/from. If one/neither of the computers have a network adapter you can buy USB Ethernet adapters pretty cheap and then connect them to the network as needed.

There is NO way to connect them through the modems unless you put each machine into a different connection phone outlet and allow one to dial the other. Without the 50 v line voltage and signalling it will not work. In any case ti could take hours to transfer a few files, dialup connections are VERY slow. Be aware also that any current files on an XP machine are not likely to be ANY use on a 95 machine, it was already a dead operating system long before XP was released. Also the disk sizes on 95 were VERY small so there will be little space for current file sizes. Seems a totally pointless exercise to me. Alsp, a 95 machine would be good for now would be if you also had a rope, it might make a good anchor.

You CAN’T use a modem for that. A modem is used to connect to the internet. You need a router.

You must have a motherboard that supports dual channeling. If you try to do that without a motherboard that supports it, it will blow your motherboard, processor, and possibly your RAM. SO DO NOT DO IT WITHOUT A MOTHERBOARD THAT SUPPORTS IT.

No, you would need to connect the RS232 serial ports via null modem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem
There are better methods.
The easiest would be to copy the files to CD, floppy or USB drive. You would need USB drivers for Win95.
You could use a Ethernet crossover cable or connect both PC via standard Ethernet patch cables to your router to share the files.
On old computers parallel connection between the computers and transfer software software such as laplink was often used.
Good Luck…

You need a phone company to be between the two computers to use the modem ports like that.
Does the Windows 95 computer have Ethernet? If so, you are in luck. Connect both to a router.
Another option is take the HD out of the Windows 95 computer and get this. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329300&Sku=M501-1220
What this does is allow you to run an external hard drive into a USB port. That should work perfectly for your Win95 drive. It also will be good in the future anytime you or someone you know needs to move data from one drive to another and the computer doesn’t work. While I don’t use it often, it can be a life saver.
