I’m trying to get a picture into the computer by scanning.

Or is scanning only for printing pictures from the computer?

depending on your printer, you will need to install the utilities they should have given you on a CD. If you don’t have the disc, find out what company made the printer/scanner and go on their website. They should have at least a driver. If they don’t, contact their customer support and ask for a CD for your printer.

Basically, a computer needs software to be able to read the incoming data (the scanned image or document)

You can print the scanned pictures and you can also save in your pc for future use or email it after saving or without saving. Basically, scanning means digitizing the image so that you can use it with the supporting electronic systems for viewing, printing, emailing, editing, inserting in documents, archiving etc.

There is no way to get the picture to your computer just by using simple printer which has no scanning function.
