I’m very good with the computer but I want to be a computer engineer. What kind of degree do I need and what are the requirements of becoming a computer engineer, also what subjects do I have to take in college?

There is some overlap of terms when you talk about a computer Engineer position. If you are majoring in Computer Engineering in college this is a technical engineering and design degree. These degree holders get jobs related to designing and manufacturing computer related hardware. Obviously when you think of hardware you think of laptops and PCs but this might be all kinds of computer devices like tablets, processors, memory, storage, networking equipment and components of computers.

So now enters the confusion. Microsoft has a certification wihic is called Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. So that is often referred to as a computer engineeering degree also. In a Systems Engineer position you would not be engineering as in producing devices but organizing, securing and designing systems to fulfill a particular need.

In the first case you would probably choose a Computer Engineering or Computer Science major and these would include lots of advanced math and Programming along with some Electrical Engineering. In the other case of being a systems engineer you would probably be a Computer Information Systems major which is the degree I hold. This would cover jobs like System Administration, Computing Security and Networking. CIS degrees are often called IT or other names so you have to look at the course listing to see what degree is which. CIS degree course may include some Programming but it will usually be minimal and no math emphasis. Again each school has latitude in the course they load into a major. CIS holder would do jobs like the following.

Computer Technician, Service Center Coordinator, Help Desk Staff, Storage Administrator, Network Administrator, Systems Administrator, Systems Engineer, Enterprise Administrator, Active Directory Administrator, Exchange and Messaging Administrator, Backup Administrator, Disaster Recovery Specialist, Database Administrator, Computing Security Specialist, Corporate IT Acquisition Specialist and Data Center Administrator, just to name a few.

In a small business the list above might be one or two people doing all these jobs. In a large Enterprise environment this could be hundreds of people.
