Open task manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Del).

Click the ‘Processes’ tab, end all processes of ‘explorer.exe’. Then from the menu, click ‘File’>new process>type…

explorer.exe

Click ‘OK’ Exit task manager and re- start.

>I just answered a question like this a few minutes ago. Here is what I wrote then to the other person. Note, this other person had Norton Antivirus, so disregard that:

If all the icons are gone, and Nortonis nowhere to be found, suspect a virus or malware did it. You will need to run antivirus and antimalware in SAFE MODE to try and get the problem resolved. Some serious malware can disable antivirus! So if he downloaded infected and then installed it, that is the likely route that it happened.

Norton may show up in Safe mode or it may be totally trashed by some virus attacks.

I would download (on your computer not his), the following and install them IN SAFE MODE:

http://www.superantispyware.com

Use the free version

http://www.malwarebytes.org

Use the free version

http://www.avg.com

This has a free version of an antivirus program which you can use if Norton is crippled.

After downloading and burning these to a DVD, reboot the computer and hold down F8, pick Safe Mode with Networking and go into Safe Mode if you can. Install the softare above in SAFE MODE ONLY and then download manually and update the definition tables for these. Run scans and see if you can eliminate the bug(s).

If this does not work, the only other alternative you have is to reformat the hard disk and reinstall the operating system. You will need your operating system disk, restore disk, repair disk and the drivers for the computer.
