Degree should I do the most good computer?
Question
by Nathan: What is the best Computer degree to have?
Just wondering what the best Computer degree is – the one that teaches you the most and makes you the most marketable in the long-term. I’m deciding between Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering Technology, Computer Networking, Etc. What do you think? I am mostly interested in designing software as a career.

If you want to be a programmer study Computer Science. Computing Engineering will teach you much of what you learn in CS, but you’ll learn some EE stuff too; it’s (COE) the most marketable degree of all. At my school, CS students take COE classes. Algorithms, Operating Systems, Data Structures, etc. were considered COE courses. If you’re interested in electronics, as well as software, then go COE over CS.
Information Systems can be confusing. Some schools have IS programs that don’t differ from CS at all. Some programs tend to cover basic CS and other stuff like: HCI design, Project Management, Human Factors Design, etc. When I was in IS, we did watered down CS stuff. The work was way easier, and they didn’t offer Security, Cryptography, Web Programming, and the theoretical courses. I’ve heard of IS students getting jobs in programming, administration, consulting, and project management. IS is supposed to breed students with knowledge in both computing technology and business processes, whereas CS and COE breeds students who can implement the technology.
Computer Networking is self-explanatory, probably best for Administrators or anyone looking to work in technical support.
