Question

: How do I transfer music off my iPod onto a new computer?

I’m about to sync my ipod to my new computer, I know that when you do this it deletes everything off of the ipod. So is there anyway I can transfer the music directly off of my ipod onto my computer first so I won’t lose everything?

You can’t- Is there any way you can transfer the songs from your old computer to your new one?

Answer by Ideoplastic

Assuming you use iTunes and not Limewire or another file sharing client for your media files:

E-mail yourself the music folder (under My Documents in Windows) from your old computer like you would any other document, then open and save it to the new one under the iTunes library. This would be the least complicated transfer method and works for all multimedia, movies included. However, if your music files are all contained in your original iTunes folder, do not combine the two because it will duplicate the songs and make extra work for you having to delete copies.

Music previously purchased from iTunes can be transferred from the main menu once you’ve authorized your new computer.

First you should make sure iTunes on your new computer is set to manual syncing, otherwise it’ll start as soon as you connect the two devices.

Answer by mac_fixit

1. Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.

2. In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.

3. In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check “Show hidden files and folders.”

4. Navigate to the Music folder. On my 2nd gen ‘pod, the full path is

Portable Media Devices\GINA’S IPOD (F:)\iPod_Control\Music

5. Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.

And you’re done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check “Keep iTunes Music Folder organized.”)

You need to load itunes onto the new computer.

Then you plug in your ipod. What you do then is go into My Computer, and open your ipod. Also, make sure that itunes is open in the mean time. In My Computer, make sure all your files are showing, including Hidden Files. Then go into the hidden ipod Control Folder, there you will find your music folder, go into the music folder and select all the files/folders and drag and drop into itunes.

To unhide files go to Tools, Folder Options, View, Hidden Files and Folders, make sure you select, Show Hidden Files and Folders.

It really depends if you bought your music from iTunes or just download them free. If you bought it in iTunes you can just sign in and get to keep all your purchased music. If you used limewire or other way to get free music, you have to somehow put all the free music on to a flash drive or disk and transfer it to the new computer, otherwise theres no other way.

This might be a bit confusing but I’ll do my best to try and explain clearly.

Make sure in iTunes, you don’t let your iPod automatically sync. Plug in your iPod.

Go to Start Menu, Accessories, Windows Explorer. Find My Computer on the tab on the left hand side, if there isn’t a tab click on the Folders icon at the top.

Open your iPod folder, by pressing the plus sign next to it [+] << that.

Click on Ipod Control. You will see some folders are yellow and some are dull, these are "hidden files“. You will see the folder Music, Artwork, Device, iTunes, Games_RO are all “hidden files“.

If you cant see any of the folders that are Music, Device extra, it means your computer is still hiding them. No problems just right click, Properties and click on Hidden and make sure it is ticked transfer songs Question process PC open music iTunes from first find files drive copy connect computer How do I transfer music from my iPod to a new computer? saveournews

To get your music. . .

Click on your Music folder and it will open. You will see it is full of folders that are titled F00 F01 F02 F03 etc etc the more music you have the more folders. For eg i have folders going up to F49

Make a new folder in your desired destination you want to save your music, (im assuming you want to save them to your hard drive and you know how to make folders)

Ok click on the first folder, should be F00, open it, you will see each file is titled with a combination of letters, for example my first file is AAYF. Click on the first file, press Shift and click on the last file in the window, right click , press copy, and then paste into your new folder on your hard drive. Wait until all the files have been copied into your new folder, and then click back go into your second folder, should be titled F02 and repeat.

Once ALL your files are safely in your new folder, just select them all and then drag them into iTunes, preferably into a new playlist called “my iPod music” about 98% of the files should reappear with all their correct names, albums, artwork details like that. A few seem to appear with the letter combinations for titles but thats easily fixable just edit the title.

Hope that helps you transfer songs Question process PC open music iTunes from first find files drive copy connect computer How do I transfer music from my iPod to a new computer? saveournews It is time consuming but well worth it transfer songs Question process PC open music iTunes from first find files drive copy connect computer How do I transfer music from my iPod to a new computer? saveournews

If you still have your old computer or laptop, you could transfer your itunes folder to the new one, using a memory stick or something if its big enough.

Then just go to file> add folder to library and choose the folder its all in.

If your computer automatically starts to sync your ipod, then hold shift and ctrl at the same time. this will stop from syncing.

the other option is to download iPod copy expert, it allows you to transfer music, playlists etc from your ipod. the only thing is the trial will copy 5 songs, so you would need to get the actual programme, maybe try downloading it off a torrent? i just bought it and it cost me about £16/17

hope you get it sorted!

Answer by Robert R
