Do a disk defrag, a disk clean up, and delete any files you no longer use. Also check for viruses, spyware etc. Make sure your XP is updated or even purchase more RAM.

The general rule of thumb is

First you improve the disk channels. This is often done by getting a faster hard-drive (often as a second drive) to store the things you run or process most often. You can get disks with 10,000 RPM easily these days and 15,000 is not unheard of, though a bit expensive yet. Also, you should defrag your hard drive frequently.

Second, add memory. If you spend too much time swapping or paging, you will be in a (seemingly) perpetual wait-state. Adding memory reduces the swap frequency because you can fit more into memory at once.

Third, see if your system is even capable of replacing your current CPU with a hotter CPU – though most motherboards are chosen for their compatibility to a relatively narrow range of CPUs and that might not be possible.

The order of improvement is Disk, Memory, CPU. If you cannot improve any of these, then the answer is, your computer is at its top already and you are stuck with it.

The “at times” makes me think it may be overheating.

Time to dust it out. Buy a can of compressed air and use it to blow out the dust around the fans and anywhere else it has collected. It is expecially important to blow into the top fan on the backside (the PSU fan). Now use Q-tips to remove the dust that has collected on and underneath the fans (in good light it will be clearly visible). When finished, wipe up all the dust that has collected on the bottom of the case.

My desktop has an “early warning sensor” when it starts to overheat (the fan goes into overdrive, hard to miss). After a cleaning, I generally wont hear that again for 6 months.

You could upgrade your hard drive, or just buy an external one and move all your files onto it.

You could upgrade your RAM and/or utilize multiple DIMM slots if you have any open ones.

eBoostr can help, too. It’s like ReadyBoost for XP. Go to eboostr.com .

CPU upgrades can do some of the job, too.

what is your processor speed.? 2.what gig htz or less..for one you can increase your ram…XP runs good on 512 megs and it’s best on 1 gig..now it depends on how much your system can hold..you can find out by going to crucial.com …next you can see what all starts when you boot up..you then can disable programs that are not necessary when your pc boots..for an example..yahoo messenger quick-time msn messenger..types of programs that start…even ..limewire myspace im..all don’t need to start you can start them manually..one way to do this is to go to RUN in the start menu type in msconfig..when the box pops up..click the start tab and see if you recognize certain programs…

uncheck those boxes..no need to worry if you check the wrong thing because system necessary stuff will automatically recheck itself..once finished and check ok you will be asked to reboot ..do that and when your pc boots you will get a box to pop up that basically notifies you that you have used the configuration utility..check the little box in the box and it will not pop up anymore…next you can do a couple of system maintenance things..

defrag the system

go to the start menu and see what your system is holding in documents recently used..don’t see recent docs..right click the TASKBAR go to properties tab click start tab /customize/advanced tab/ at the bottom you will see a little box that says “list recent docs” check that box then click ok..when you go to the start menu you should now see your recent docs..if you have many..go back to that same area and and click CLEAR it will clear those docs and free even more resource…try it and see..

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause “computer slow”.

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

Have you ever Defragged your computer? Fragmentation occurs as you create, download and edit files. The files get broken up into little pieces and saved wherever free space is available. Then the computer has to work extra hard (using many I/O cues) to open these fragmented files. The same occurs with a tranfer and makes the computer really slow. This severely degrades the speed, performance and reliability of your computer. Try an automatic defragger so you’ll never have to worry about defragging again.
